ESG only matters when it changes how an organisation actually makes decisions.

Tao-Ru Wang (王韜儒) is Executive Secretary at the Center for Business Sustainability, National Chengchi University, where he runs a sustainability research portfolio of NTD 38.5 million, advises enterprises on ESG transformation, and led the design of a corporate carbon emissions and carbon footprint monitoring system.

Before that he was Project Manager and Policy Researcher at the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, leading more than fifteen policy studies on net-zero transition, energy regulation and smart cities. Earlier still, at the Institute for Information Industry, he handled system integration exports into the Vietnamese and Indonesian markets and carried out a risk assessment for a solar plant in Palau. In the first part of his career he co-founded Mog Art Gallery in Shanghai, working in cultural design and emerging-artist representation, and worked at the Taiwan Design Center (now the Taiwan Design Research Institute) and the Corporate Synergy Development Center on cultural and creative transformation for regional industries, covering ceramics, glass, bamboo craft and indigenous culture.

That path runs through chemistry, cultural industries, the art market, cross-border commerce and policy research, and has settled on carbon accounting methodology and verification. Sustainability is a broad, cross-domain subject: it is accounting, it is regulation, it is procurement, it is process engineering, it is international trade. Working outside your own field is therefore the entry requirement for this job. To change how an organisation decides, you first have to understand how it was deciding already.

He publishes independent research on carbon pricing, carbon accounting methodology, sustainability disclosure and the geopolitics of energy.
